How to Make Extra Money with Affiliate Marketing (And Start Today on Gumroad)
Montiqua

Let's talk about one of the most realistic ways to add income to your life without inventing a whole new business from scratch.
Affiliate marketing.
Not the hyped-up version where someone shows you a screenshot of a $40,000 month and tells you to "just post consistently." The real version, where you recommend things you actually use, someone buys through your link, and you get paid a percentage of that sale.
That's it. That's the whole model.

Why Affiliate Marketing Works for Regular People
Here's what makes it different from most side hustles: you don't have to create the product.
No inventory. No customer service. No refund emails at 11pm. No designing, writing, filming, or formatting anything you plan to sell. The creator already did that part. Your job is to connect the right person to the right product.
That's a real skill, by the way. Don't let anyone tell you it isn't.
A few things worth being honest about up front:
It's not passive at first. People love to call this passive income. It becomes semi-passive once you've built content that keeps working for you: a pin, a blog post, a YouTube video that people find months later. But the building part is active work.
You need trust more than you need traffic. A hundred people who believe you will out-earn ten thousand who scrolled past. This is why affiliate marketing works so well for people with small, engaged audiences.
Digital products convert better for beginners. Commission rates on physical goods are often 3 to 8%. Digital products routinely pay 20 to 50%, sometimes more. Same effort, wildly different math.
Recommend what you actually use. Beyond it being the right thing to do, it's the only version of this that's sustainable. You can't write convincingly about a tool you've never opened.
What Realistic Extra Money Looks Like
Let's put actual numbers on this instead of vague promises.
Say you promote a $50 digital product at 30% commission. That's $15 per sale. Two sales a week is $120/month. Not life-changing, but that's a phone bill and a tank of gas.
Now say you build a handful of pieces of content that each bring in a couple of sales a month, across three or four products. That stacks. Four products doing five sales a month at $15 each is $300/month, and that content keeps working while you sleep.
The people earning meaningful money from this didn't find one magic product. They built a small library of helpful content pointing at things they genuinely recommend, and they gave it time.
How to Start Affiliate Marketing on Gumroad Today
Gumroad is one of the friendliest places to start, because it's built around digital products and the affiliate setup is genuinely simple. Here's the walkthrough.

Step 1: Create Your Account
Head to Gumroad and sign up. It's free.
The step people skip: complete your payout settings. Go into your settings and connect your bank account or PayPal, and fill in your tax information. You can earn commissions before doing this, but you can't get paid until it's done. Do it on day one so it's not a problem later.
Step 2: Choose a Product
Pick something genuinely useful for the people who already listen to you.
Ask yourself: what does my audience struggle with, and what have I used that helped? If you're talking to new virtual assistants, a client onboarding template makes sense. If you're talking to small business owners drowning in admin, a systems workbook makes sense.
What doesn't work is picking whatever has the highest commission rate and hoping. Relevance beats commission percentage every single time.
Start with one to three products. Not fifteen. You want to be able to speak about each one with real specificity.
Step 3: Get Your Affiliate Link
On Gumroad, there are two ways in.
Gumroad Discover: Some products in Gumroad's marketplace are affiliate-eligible, meaning you can generate a link yourself without asking anyone. Browse Discover, find products in your niche, and look for the affiliate option on eligible listings.
Join a creator's program directly: Many creators run their own affiliate programs and invite affiliates in. When a creator adds you, Gumroad generates your unique link and tracks everything automatically. This route usually means better commission rates and a real relationship with the creator, which matters more than people realize.
Either way, Gumroad handles the tracking and the payouts. You don't need separate software.
Step 4: Share Helpful Content
This is where the money actually comes from, and it's where most people get it wrong.
Dropping a link with "check this out 🔥" does nothing. Nobody buys from a link. They buy from context.
What works:
- Tutorials: show your process, and mention the tool or template you use inside it
- Honest reviews: what it does well, who it's for, and who should skip it
- Pinterest pins: a graphic that solves a problem, linked to a post that recommends the product
- Round-ups: "5 tools I actually use to run my business," with your link on each
And disclose your affiliate links. Say plainly that you earn a commission if someone buys through your link. It's required in the US under FTC guidelines, and it builds trust rather than costing you any. People respect being told.
One more thing that trips up beginners: use your affiliate link, not the regular product URL. If you copy the link from the product page instead of your affiliate dashboard, the sale doesn't get tracked to you, and you earn nothing on a sale you created. Double check every link before you post it.
Step 5: Track Your Results
Your Gumroad dashboard shows your affiliate sales. Actually look at it.
You're looking for patterns: which product converts, which piece of content drove the sale, which platform sent the buyer. Then do more of what's working and stop pouring energy into what isn't.
Give it real time, though. A pin can take weeks to gain traction. A blog post can take months to rank. Don't kill a strategy at week two.
